Jazz Behind the Green Door
Jazz Behind The Green Door is a monthly evening of jazz music presented by emerging jazz musicians.
Jazz is a musical style that is defined primarily by spontaneity and improvisation. Jazz as a musical genre originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisations. Despite its creation overseas, the emphasis on improvisation and invention means that performance in an Australian context can lead to a new interpretation of this musical style, leadings towards a unique expression of the Australian mindset and culture. Jazz is a very exciting style of musical expression and performance. The St Stephen's Sydney Music and Cultural Foundation is proud to support the development and performance of jazz music and jazz musicians in Sydney through sponsorship of Jazz Behind the Green Door.
