A Harvest of Joy
A Harvest of Joy is a new anthem by young Australian composer Courtney Cousins, based on the text of Psalm 126.
The words of the Psalm read, "When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouths were filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy. Then it was said among the nations, 'The Lord has done great things for them.' The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoiced. Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses in the Negeb. May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy. Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves." The choral work, for SATB choir, was premiered at St Stephen's Uniting Church on the 13th November, 2022 with the St Stephen's Church Choir. Courtney Cousins is a talented young composer who recently graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The Magnificat
An exciting new piece of music for Advent 2023 has been composed by Elsa Susnjara, with text from Mary's Song of Praise, known as the Magnificat.
The Magnificat is one of the eight most ancient Christian hymns, and has been set to music countless times over the centuries. The text lends itself to new interpretations, and this new work by a young woman, is especially uplifting. The text, from the Gospel of Luke, is an unexpected word of hope: "His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty." Elsa Susnjara's Magnificat will be premiered at St Stephen's Uniting Church in December 2022, featuring choir and Pipe organ. |
